David Kotz

Senior Research Fellow and Professor Emeritus

David M. Kotz is Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Distinguished Professor in the School of Economics at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. His research and writing have been on macroeconomic problems and policies, business cycles and long-run economic stagnations, institutional change in economic systems, economic policy regimes, and comparative economic systems. He has done research on the U.S. economy, the Soviet and post-Soviet economic systems, and the evolution of China’s economy. He is the author of The Rise and Fall of Neoliberal Capitalism, Harvard University Press, 2015; the coauthor with Fred Weir of Russia's Path from Gorbachev to Putin: The Demise of the Soviet System and the New Russia, Routledge, 2007; and also with Fred Weir, Revolution from Above: The Demise of the Soviet System, Routledge, 1997; and Bank Control of Large Corporations in the U.S., University of California Press, 1978. He is coeditor with Terrence McDonough and Michael Reich of Contemporary Capitalism and Its Crises: Social Structure of Accumulation Theory for the 21st Century, Cambridge University Press, 2010; and coeditor of Social Structures of Accumulation: The Political Economy of Growth and Crisis, Cambridge University Press, 1994.

He has published articles in Review of Radical Political Economics, New Left Review, Science and Society, Monthly Review, World Review of Political Economy, and International Critical Thought. His books and articles have been translated into Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, and Malayalam. His policy advocacy articles and op-eds have appeared in Jacobin, Democratic Left, Truthout, Dollars and Sense, The Nation, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and In These Times. He has developed curriculums and given workshops in popular economics for the AFL-CIO Education Department and the Center for Popular Economics.
