  • Intro Text: In a new study published by the Center of Global Policy Solutions, PERI’s Peter Arno reviews research that examines childhood obesity intervention in conjunction with research that focuses on the social determinants of health underlying the epidemic. There are currently 13 million obese children and adolescents in the U.S. A disproportionate share of these young people are from poor backgrounds and racial minorities. Arno argues narrowly-targeted obesity intervention strategies alone will not address the epidemic. It is equally necessary to advance policies aimed at reducing poverty and inequality, neighborhood disadvantage, and residential segregation.

Advancing Equitable Approaches to Childhood Obesity Prevention

Abstract

The latest epidemiological data suggest that the incidence of obesity among children may have stabilized, although at a dangerously high level. There are currently about 13 million obese children and adolescents in the U.S. Moreover, significant racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities exist and may be widening. This report consists of an expansive, annotated literature review in two broad sections—(1) intervention studies geared at preventing childhood obesity and (2) studies that examine some of the social determinants of health underlying the epidemic.
