Marxism and the Global Prospects for Economic Justice

PERI is proud to be co-sponsoring (with the Economics Department’s Political Economy Seminar) lectures by Professor Howard Sherman and Professor Prabhat Patnaik, both internationally renowned economists working in the traditions of Marxism and radical political economy.

Howard Sherman is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Riverside.  Among his many works, he is author of Reinventing Marxism, Foundations of Radical Political Economy, and The Business Cycle: Growth and Crisis in Capitalism. He is recipient of the 2004 Veblen-Commons Award of the Association for Evolutionary Economics to honor his distinguished lifetime contributions to economics. Professor Sherman’s lecture on Tuesday May 1 is titled “Social Evolution and Revolution.”

Prabhat Patnaik is Professor of Economics at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning in the School of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. Among his many writings, he is author of Accumulation and Stability under Capitalism, Egalitarianism and Economics, and Whatever Happened to Imperialism?  He is currently Vice-chair of the Planning Commission of the Indian state of Kerala.  Professor Patnaik will present a three-lecture series on May 2-4, including “Marxian Economics Today,” “Socialism Today in Theory and Practice,” and “Neoliberalism and Resistance in India.”

All lectures will be held at 4:00 in the third floor conference room at  Gordon Hall, 418 N. Pleasant St., Amherst, MA.
